The Babbel Stranger Talks are a series of discussions on diversity and take place every two weeks at the Babbel Office in Berlin-Mitte. Launched and organized by Babbel team members, they present diversity topics of concern to them. Whether it’s about unconscious bias, gender-appropriate language, mental health, othering or political correctness, the talks provide an open discourse and safe space in which theoretical knowledge about diversity is conveyed and dialogue is initiated. So the slogan “Diversity makes us stronger” is no empty word at Babbel, because in the team of more than 600 employees in Berlin and New York from more than 50 nations Diversity affects everyone.
The Stranger Talks are a grassroots movement within Babbel initiated by the passion of four employees. So the value of diversity has spread throughout the company and everyone’s involvement has developed.
The success of the talks is now clear throughout the company and beyond: For example, the Didactics team has created diversity guidelines for language courses, the HR team follows guidelines for non-discriminatory job descriptions, and the office team has campaigned for a unisex toilet. In addition, the international marketing campaign #babbelforall emerged from the Stranger Talks, which alluded to the LGBTI * rights in Russia, as well as the international TV ad with Alien Alexi, focusing on the feeling for the character and on stereotypes and Gender was waived.
